The ST. VINCENT'S COLLEGE OF COMMERCE was started in 1972 by the Society of Jesus (or "Jesuits' as they are more popularly known as), a Christian Religious Order founded by St. Ignatius of Loyola in 1540. St. Ignatius of Loyola was born in the Basque province of Spain in 1491. In his youth, young Ignatius was filled with thoughts of valour and chivalry. He had joined the forces of the Duke of Navarre and while defending a fortress at a place called Pamplona in 1523 against French troops, his left knee was shattered by a cannon ball. During the period of his convalescence, he had a deep conversion experience and decided to join God's forces. From then onwards, he went through a process of trying to concretise this calling, eventually resulting in the formation of the Society of Jesus. Since its inception, the Society has been active in the field of education throughout the world. Worldwide, the Society of Jesus is responsible for over 665 Educational Institutions in about 65 countries, engaging the efforts of approximately 70,000 teachers and educating approximately 15,00,000 students every year. The Jesuits could undoubtedly be called the global leaders of education. In India, the Society of Jesus is responsible for over 110 High Schools, 24 University Colleges and 14 Technical Institutes. These institutions are part of the Catholic Church's effort to share in the country's educational undertaking. This effort, though particularly responsible towards the Christian Community, has always served the entire nation. Students of these institutions belong to every social class, community and linguistic group. They aim at making their own contribution towards a transformation of the present-day social conditions, so that principles of social justice, equality of opportunity, genuine freedom, and respect for religious and moral values, enshrined in the Constitution of India, may prevail, and the possibility of living a fully human existence may be open before all. The St. Vincent's College of Commerce was set up primarily to offer an opportunity to working youth, who wished to pursue their higher studies while continuing to work. It was started initially as a degree college to which, later, were added the junior college and the post-graduate sections. It adheres to the Jesuit hallmark of an all-round, value-based and disciplined approach to education. Over the years The St. Vincent's College of Commerce has immerged as a center of excellence in the field of commerce education. This has been made possible thanks to the commitment and consistant efforts of the management, faculty and non-teaching staff. Quality
education in the true sense is not mere learning, but the formation of the whole
person. At St. Vincent's College, special care is taken to build the character
of the students, inculcating in them values of morality and social justice, with
the hope of developing people who can become instruments of creating a more humane
society. | |
